A well written cover letter to go with your executive resume can mean not only a better chance that you will land the senior management role you are applying for, but it can also give you a good head start in the salary negotiation process. The cover letter is usually the first thing that gives the exective recruiter any kind of insight into your abilities, skills and qualifications for the senior management job at hand and, on the executive job market, a strong first impression often translates into a bigger initial salary offer.
The thing to remember is that the goal of the cover letter is not to land you the job, but a job interview. The most important thing when writing the letter is to write a compelling pitch, one that will make the executive recruiter want to meet with you to discuss your career options at his/her firm. To accomplish this, your cover letter needs to spell out clearly that you are an exceptional job candidate with an excellent track record in different executive roles.
The executive cover letter typically consists of three parts. In the first paragraph, the job candidate usually explains where he/she saw the job advertised, provides some basic information about him/herself, and tells the executive recruiter why he/she finds this particular position and company desirable as the next step in his/her career.
In the second paragraph, the applicant will typically say why he/she is a good candidate for the senior management vacancy at hand and back this up with several solid facts related to his/her qualifications, experience in senior management roles, or record of accomplishments. It is important that the executive recruiter sees that the applicant has both a good grasp of what the position entails and the skills necessary to do the job well.
In the last paragraph, a job candidate can briefly reiterate his/her motivation for wanting to join the executive recruiter's company or simply thank the recruiter for considering them for the position. To see what an executive cover letter typically looks like, read the example below.
